PLay time
Taking time to play is so important in a busy life. I tend to always have a long list of to do's, especially at this time of year. Planning a fundraiser and a tradeshow, takes up most of my awake and sleeping time. The list is long and I am one of those people who love to check off my tasks. Actually I highlight them in pink marker.
But since I became a member of the Beaumont Artists Guild, I have been stealing time to paint, draw and burn. By burning, I mean wood burning. May years ago I painted with oils, taking lessons with a wonderful teacher, Mr. Hannely at Highlands school in Edmonton. Oil paint was not my forte, and it would take me forever to get a painting done. I didn't know it then, but it was because I was trying to make it perfect and that is impossible. The best painting I ever did was one that I spilled the turpentine on it, and had to redo a part of it. Back then I was so worried about making a mistake. I rarely found joy in the painting I created.
On Thanksgiving Monday, I spent most of the day painting Christmas Cards. Just drawing and playing. If you look closely you will see imperfection, paint outside the lines...yeah for me.
Our generation grew up with the idea of, "do it right or don't do it at all". I feel this is a mistake. Sometimes doing something just to enjoy the experience, even if it is not perfect, feels so good.
